Spam/Virus Filtering

Mac OS X Server includes SpamAssassin, a powerful junk mail filter which analyzes the text of each email and assigns it a probability rating for being junk mail — amvisd then marks the mail as potential junk or discards/quarantines definite junk. Because SpamAssassin is adaptive, it can be trained, either manually or automatically, to distinguish junk mail from acceptable mail.  Also included in Mac OS X Server is ClamAV, which scans mail messages and attachments for viruses, automatically deleting the message or quarantining it to a specified directory on the server for further analysis.

Proper configuration is critical to achieve a the best performance. ServerAdmin provides a simple interface to enable these feaures, but leaves the system poorly configured and without a simple mechanism to train spamassassin.
A few examples of an enhanced configuration:
- Copies of spam and virus mails are quarantined to a hidden directory. This directory will continue to grow, Apple provides no mechanism to manage the quarantine. Alternate methods of quarantine provide easy administration.
- Proper training and correction is crucial to achieve a high level of accuracy, Apple does not provide a simple method for users to train SpamAssassin. One solution; using iMap and shared mailboxes, provides an easy interface for users to train and corrrect SpamAssassin, while also maintaining confidentiality of data.
- The Apple GUI does not allow you to specify different actions for suspected junk (medium score) vs probable junk (high score). We can customize the settings and actions performed to suit your organizations needs.

Working together, we will setup effective solutions which fit your company and the work style of your users.
